I got out with Bill this morning on Lake Charlevoix. We started off at 4:00 am on the North arm and trolled for two hours with no success. Water temps running 39 degrees. We picked up and ran to the south arm just after daylight and found warmer water at 48 degrees. On the first pass we managed an 18 inch walleye that hit a blueberry muffin reef runner. Then after a couple of smallmouth and a couple of lost fish we picked up another walleye again about 18 inches on a shad rap. The highlight of the day however was just before we pulled lines at 10 am. Bill managed to wrestle this nice northern to the boat that took a husky jerk. A little chilly out there today but it sure was nice to get back out again, it has been too long!
Burt Lake - Midnight - 4 a.m. April 30th. Lines were set and first trolling pass commenced at 12:40. It didn't take long for our first fish to take on a Matzuo crank in purple shad. Fish did it's part and held on to the bait while we shuffled around the boat getting reacclimated with the process of landing a fish. (where's the net...keep the line out of the motor, watch out for the cooler, just spilled my beer....), well, we trolled for about 10 more minutes without a hit, so we did a u-turn and went right back over our track. Sure enough, pulled another fish off that same break, this one coming on a firetiger HJ-8. If we were smart, we would have beat that spot up a few more times, but we continued our pass north, and two, maybe four Molson's later, had two more nice fish cooperate into biting. We had 4 fish in the box by 2:15 a.m. and from that point on......it was just a slow boat ride. Not hits, no fouled hooks, no tangles, just cold beer and good tunes on the stereo.
All fish were caught in less than 15 ft. of water, water temp 46 degrees, speed 1.0 to 1.3 mph. Also, action was on both inside boards with the two lure mentioned above.
My BIL and I managed to boat 9 eyes and two very nice Browines Saturday between 7:30am & 12:30pm, Great opener on the new boat. Cold beer, good tunes, flags dropping, full livewell, and totally outfishing your buddy running the same water...PRICELESS!
